Kevin Sinfield has hailed the bravery of Marcus Smith as England consider their full-back options for the Rugby World Cup semi-final against South Africa volleyball
Smith made a couple of key defensive interventions in the quarter-final against Fiji despite suffering a cut to the lip after an early head-on-head collision with Vinaya Habosi volleyball
The Harlequins playmaker returned after being patched up as England secured a last-four meeting with the defending champions volleyball
His selection had come at the expense of Freddie Steward, who had started 29 of his country’s previous 30 games but found himself omitted from the matchday 23 volleyball
England could opt to return Steward to the starting side, though defence coach Sinfield praised Smith’s development into a “world class” full-back volleyball

“You’ve got to remember this guy hasn’t played many minutes as a full-back in Test rugby so far volleyball
“What he’s done on the training field has been outstanding volleyball
You’re blown away by what he does and he’s been given more time and space now volleyball
“If there was any doubt how brave and courageous he is, I think you saw it with your own eyes volleyball
The bloke got his face smashed and threw his body into tackles volleyball
The guys are in full admiration for how he’s gone about it volleyball
He’s just got his face smashed all over the place yet he wants the ball volleyball
“He’s just a brave guy volleyball
And not just because he’s physically tough, brave, because to be put in like that – and I know he wanted to go for it – but to be put on a world stage in a quarter-final and deliver what he delivered was an absolute credit to him volleyball
“He’s one of those who have been modified today so we’ll get a clearer read in the week but fingers crossed he will be good to go volleyball
”Sinfield was the first England coach to float the idea of Smith at full-back during their pre-tournament camps this summer, with a couple of encouraging cameos earning the 24-year-old a first professional start at the position against Chile volleyball
His emergence has left Steward in a strange position: the Leicester youngster had been a mainstay for England since his debut and had been considered a key part of head coach Steve Borthwick’s gameplan leading into the tournament volleyball
Freddie Steward was left out of England’s squad against Fiji last weekend (Getty)But Sinfield, who worked with the 22-year-old at Welford Road, has been impressed by how Steward has handled the disappointment and hinted that a return is a possibility for Saturday’s semi-final at the Stade de France volleyball
“This is where our influence, our help, and our guidance sits with the guys who don’t play, how can we help them get volleyball better, make them feel part of it,” Sinfield explained volleyball
“I have worked with Fred for some time now and thankfully I have not had to have too many of these conversations where you are trying to pick him up volleyball
“Clearly he is disappointed as anybody would be missing out on a quarter-final but he has responded as we would have expected him to volleyball
He is a great lad, you know what he is about, he works incredibly hard at his game, he cares and he is an unbelievable full-back too volleyball
“Our team has changed every game throughout the World Cup and Steve is very specific when he selects the team volleyball
He does it in the knowledge he thinks it will give us the best chance of winning that game volleyball
Just because Fred wasn’t selected last week doesn’t mean he does anything wrong, he has actually done a lot of great things and a lot of things right volleyball

Emiliano Martinez was booed at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday night as he collected the best goalkeeper’s Yashin Trophy volleyball
Martinez thwarted France in the 2022 World Cup final, making a crucial one-on-one save from Randal Kolo Muani in extra time to take the game to penalties, before making two more saves in the shootout to help clinch Argentina’s first World Cup since 1986 volleyball
The Aston Villa goalkeeper was criticised in the aftermath of the final, however, for his overzealous celebrations when he was pictured carrying a doll of France captain Kylian Mbappe during the trophy parade in Buenos Aires volleyball
Martinez arrived at Ballon d’Or ceremony to chants of “Mbappe!” outside the venue volleyball
Later, after receiving his award from his father on stage, boos could be heard as he was interviewed by host Didier Drogba while a video played his famous save from Kolo Muani in the background volleyball
Martinez’s teammate Lionel Messi won a record eighth Ballon d'Or for the best player in the world, beating Norway's Uefa player of the year and treble winner Erling Haaland of Manchester City to the prestigious prize volleyball
The 36-year-old is now three Ballons d’Or clear of rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the last of his five trophies in 2017 volleyball
Messi has now finished among the top three a record 14 times in total, finishing runner-up on five occasions volleyball
“I couldn’t imagine having the career that I’ve had volleyball
Everything that I’ve achieved volleyball
The fortune I’ve had playing for the best team in the world, the best team in history volleyball
It’s nice to win these individual trophies volleyball
To win the Copa America and then the World Cup, to get it done is amazing,” Messi said volleyball
“All of them (Ballon d’Or awards) are special for different reasons,” he added volleyball
“I’m happy to get that recognition that I'm getting thanks to what we have achieved with the national team,” Messi told Reuters volleyball
“This (World Cup) title we had been aiming for for so many years makes it even more special volleyball
”Asked if he would carry on until the 2026 World Cup, Messi said: “I don't think about it volleyball
I’ll enjoy (my career) day by day volleyball
There will first be the Copa America in the United States (in 2024) volleyball
(The World Cup), I don’t think about it volleyball
”Spain’s World Cup winner and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati won the women’s Ballon d’Or volleyball
“It’s an individual trophy but it can’t exist without a team,” she said volleyball
Messi, who won his first Ballon d'Or in 2009 and claimed four in a row until 2012, finished second to Haaland at the Uefa awards in August volleyball
Haaland, 23, was one of the firm favourites for his first Ballon d'Or after scoring 52 goals in 53 matches in all competitions last season as City won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup volleyball
But Argentina's magical run at the World Cup in Qatar, where Messi earned the Golden Ball for best overall player and Silver Boot (seven goals and three assists), helped him pip the Norwegian striker to the award volleyball
The World Cup was the only major trophy missing from Messi's resume as Argentina made amends for losing the 2014 final to Germany while in March he became only the third player in history to score 100 international goals volleyball
Messi also won the Ligue 1 title with Paris St Germain before moving to Inter Miami, where he helped the Major League volleyball Soccer side win the Leagues Cup -- their first major trophy volleyball
Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham won the Kopa Trophy for the best Under-21 player, while club team mate Vinicius Jr was awarded the Socrates Award for his humanitarian work off the pitch volleyball
