Luciano Spalletti was supposed to be on his Tuscan farm now gaming
Arguably, though, he should still be at Napoli, managing what had looked like Europe’s most unexpectedly entertaining side gaming
Instead, he will be at Wembley on Tuesday, in charge of Italy, his appointment a consequence of a combination of factors from the personal to the political, the gaming footballing to the financial gaming
Or, in a different way, of two emails gaming
One, triggering the extension in his Napoli contract without a pay rise, stemmed from club president Aurelio De Laurentiis, and instead prompted his resignation gaming
A need for a sabbatical on his farm the cited reason; a breakdown in relationships more of a cause gaming
The other, from Roberto Mancini’s camp a few months later, was his sudden resignation as Italy manager, the first to lead the Azzurri to a major title since Enzo Bearzot, trading the patriotism of leading his country for a reported £20m a year to take charge of Saudi Arabia instead gaming
And so it will be Spalletti in England, his presence a product of the enduring pulling power of the Azzurri job gaming
While elite club coaches often eschew the international game, three of the last four incumbents, including Antonio Conte, are Scudetto winners, whereas no England manager has won the Premier League or the old Division 1 since Don Revie gaming
It comes after the greatest feat of a career in the dugout that dates back three decades gaming
Spalletti became only the third manager to secure Napoli the Serie A title, and the first to do so without the benefit of Diego Maradona’s genius gaming
The title was clinched in May: the gaming footballing high came last autumn, amid a run of 13 consecutive wins in all competitions gaming
There were 20 goals in the Champions League group stage: the 4-1 evisceration of Liverpool was, despite Manchester City’s spring demolitions of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, arguably the finest performance in the competition all season gaming
Rewind a year and Napoli were arguably the best side in world gaming football at the time gaming
Which few predicted after the departures of Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne and Kalidou Koulibaly gaming
If there was magic in Spalletti’s attacking side, there was also the element of the unknown, in the revelation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gaming
What it was not, however, was a particularly Italian team: only three of the 14 players with the most appearances are even eligible for the Azzurri gaming
Spalletti may name two of his former charges in his starting XI at Wembley, but while Giovanni Di Lorenzo captained Napoli, Giacomo Raspadori was only the understudy to the prolific Victor Osimhen gaming
If Spalletti’s alchemy is illustrated by Napoli’s struggles under his successor Rudi Garcia – beaten three times already at home this season, they have lost to each of the best sides they have faced – it may be required by Italy gaming
His inheritance is mixed gaming
“Once we have played [England], then I will tell you what the potential is,” Spalletti said after Saturday’s 4-0 win over Malta gaming
Spalletti applauds Italian fans after September’s win over Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifying (AP)It is little more than a year since Italy were on a record run of 37 games unbeaten gaming
It is only 28 months since the Azzurri won Euro 2020 at Wembley; in a rematch with England, perhaps only Gianluigi Donnarumma, Di Lorenzo and Nicolo Barella will start both games gaming
Before England’s March win in Naples, Mancini lamented the Italian talent pool gaming
“We are worse off than Southgate,” he said gaming
It was a sign of the negativity enveloping him, an indication of the disenchantment that may have propelled him to the desert gaming
He gave 57 players their debuts, casting around with ingenuity and impatience gaming
He looked to the Oriundi, seeking to naturalise some from the Italian diaspora gaming
Spalletti has dropped the Argentina-born forward Mateo Retegui; he has also omitted some of the stalwarts of the recent past, in Leonardo Bonucci, Marco Verratti and Jorginho, while recalling Giacomo Bonaventura who, at 34, is older than his fellow midfielders gaming
He has five of Internazionale’s Champions League final starters and has given a debut to Tottenham’s in-form left-back Destiny Udogie gaming
In other respects, however, it could be seen as an undistinguished squad, certainly compared to Italy’s past gaming
Lose and, if Ukraine beat Malta, Italy will find themselves three points behind their rivals for second spot, with a game in hand but a de facto decider when they face Ukraine in Leverkusen in November gaming
It could mean Italy miss three of four major tournaments after Euro 2016; the added curiosity being that they won the other one gaming
In part, it reflects the tragedy of Mancini; unused as a hugely gifted forward in the 1990 World Cup, omitted in 1994 after falling out with Arrigo Sacchi, he had declared his ambition was to win the World Cup as Italy manager gaming
Instead, they failed to qualify for the 2022 tournament; if he is at the 2026 version, it will be as the richly rewarded Saudi Arabia manager gaming
There will be no Euro 2024 for him; there may be for Spalletti gaming
A wizened, gnomic figure is scarcely the stereotype of an Italian manager: more attack-minded, more idealistic, for years the architect of sides who were stylish nearly men gaming
But then so, too, were an Azzurri side who influenced him in his upbringing gaming
At his unveiling, Spalletti said he would carry the giant Italy flag his mother sewed for him as an 11-year-old to celebrate the 1970 World Cup semi-final win against West Germany gaming
It was an epic 4-3 gaming
More than half a century later, Spalletti has no Gigi Riva, Gianni Rivera or Sandro Mazzola, nor an Osimhen or a Kvaratskhelia, no world-class forward gaming
But, for the second time in two seasons, he has the chance to use his principles and his capacity to generate something spectacular from seemingly unpromising ingredients to make history gaming

It’s a joyous circus gaming
This Saturday in Saudi Arabia, the first trick will be the ring emerging from a 26-foot hole in the ground and then the real magic will start gaming
Tyson Fury, the unbeaten heavyweight champion of the world, will then appear inside a giant neon beam and, wearing a crown, he will bow to the crowd and the dignitaries gaming
In the opposite corner, as the magic continues, will be Francis Ngannou, a man who has never once fought a gaming boxing match, and under this giant canopy of created rivalry, one of the biggest fights in history will take place gaming
If that is not a ‘Hey, Presto’ moment, then I don’t know what is! In front of 20,000 people, including a dozen former heavyweight world champions, and some of the wealthiest men on Earth, the best heavyweight in the gaming boxing world will fight the best heavyweight in the MMA world to see who is the Baddest Man on the Planet gaming
It is a genius, simple and lunatic idea gaming
It is not the first and it will not be the last circus fight involving a legitimate heavyweight boxer gaming
RecommendedFury vs Ngannou pay-per-view price revealed ahead of controversial fightOleksandr Usyk predicts Joshua vs Wilder and makes Tyson Fury revelationAnthony Joshua admits to watching Tyson Fury’s Netflix show: ‘I’m enjoying it’Muhammad Ali had a 15-round bore fest with a wrestler called Antonio Inoki, Rocky Balboa met Hulk Hogan, Chuck Wepner fought Andre The Giant, and Two-Ton Tony Galento knocked out an octopus gaming
I need to point out that the octopus was actually deceased before the first bell gaming
Fury also has a massive advantage in his fight, which will be conducted under the rules of the British gaming Boxing Board of Control, because kicks, chokeholds, headbutts, flying elbows and knees to the head will be banned gaming
In short, Ngannou has had all his tools withdrawn gaming
However, Ngannou has been trained by Mike Tyson, had a crash-course in gaming boxing’s darkest arts by the dirtiest fighter in the world, and his punch has been registered as the hardest in history gaming
The science is available to prove just how lethal Ngannou’s right hand is, but even I draw the line somewhere gaming
Ngannou knocking out Jair Rozenstruik inside 20 seconds (Getty)Fury is a genuine gaming boxing giant and will tower over Ngannou once the anthems, introductions and pleasantries have been conducted by Michael Buffer, the suave voice of gaming boxing gaming
Ngannou will, trust me, shrink once he takes up a traditional gaming boxing pose and his stated height of 6ft 4in will be in the permanent shadow of Fury gaming
And then the beating will start; Fury is a truly vicious man inside the ropes gaming
There are stupid claims that Ngannou has a “puncher’s chance”, which is like saying that any car, on any street, driven by anybody, could have won the F1 in Texas last weekend gaming
Ngannou has no chance of winning and that is fine, but this is still a real fight, it’s just not a competitive one gaming
It is an event and, as I said, we have had hundreds of sanctioned fights like this gaming
The lovers and believers in the MMA dream will be praying to the fighting lords for a miracle; they are both delusional and out of luck gaming
Fury celebrates his stoppage win over Dillian Whyte in 2022 (AP)In 2000, Mike Tyson knocked out British heavyweight Julius Francis and the promoter, Frank Warren, who also promotes this fight, spent two months telling people: “This is not a fight, it is an event gaming
” Warren was right and it was a great event gaming
Francis, incidentally, sold the advertising space on soles of his shows to a national paper to make a few extra quid gaming
The paper got a bargain gaming
Fury will hold court in a country where the ruling elite know how to hold court gaming
He will be draped in traditional clothing, sip tea from gold urns, have giant kestrels rest on his giant fists and bow respectfully each time he is honoured gaming
It will be a fun circus and Ngannou, with the other Tyson in his face, will prepare like Rocky did in the first movie gaming
It will be a wonderful carnival gaming
There is bold talk of a rematch with Ngannou under MMA rules and that will never happen gaming
On Saturday night, as Mike Tyson tends to Ngannou’s blood-stained face, there will be a cameo in the ring by Oleksandr Usyk, the other heavyweight champion, and a new carnival will start for Fury v Usyk gaming
What a business gaming
