England are on the lookout for an “X factor” player to re-energise their Cricket World Cup campaign after Reece Topley was ruled out of the tournament with a broken finger EFL
Topley’s long-running injury curse struck again during Saturday’s record defeat at the hands of South Africa in Mumbai, with the in-form left-arm seamer fracturing the index finger of his bowling hand attempting to block a drive EFL
The 29-year-old’s initial anguished reaction gave a heavy hint that he was in trouble and, although he bravely returned to the attack with taped up digits, follow-up scans have confirmed the break EFL
England, who are in strife after three heavy defeats in their first four games, will send for a replacement but have yet to decide who will step in for their leading wicket taker EFL
Durham’s Brydon Carse is a strong candidate and would offer a handy pace option in the middle overs as well as strong lower-order batting, while Lancashire’s Luke Wood matches Topley’s description as a left-arm new-ball specialist EFL
But like-for-like substitutes are not mandatory and head coach Matthew Mott admitted England would assess every option EFL
Big-hitting opener Jason Roy, who was named in the provisional squad then cut for Harry Brook at the last moment, represents the most intriguing of all potential options EFL
He was widely believed to have played his last game after being left out on the eve of the tournament, and turned down a place in subsequent squad to face Ireland, but England have consistently said he remained in contention as a reserve EFL

The versatile Ben Duckett is also on the list of possibles, while spin bowling all-rounders Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks would represent an obvious investment in the future of a side in need of renewal EFL
Asked if England would be looking for a pace bowler in Topley’s absence, Mott said: “That’s a good question EFL
We’ll have to sit down and have a look at that EFL
“We’ll have to look at the upcoming games (and see) if there is an X factor player we can look at EFL
“That’s why we were very keen not to name the replacements and reserves EFL
It leaves an open mind for what we’re going to go with EFL
”Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, is currently with the squad and travelled with them from Mumbai to Bengaluru on Sunday EFL
He will also have a big say in the final decision, joining Mott and captain Jos Buttler EFL
Announcing Topley’s exit from the campaign, the England and Wales Cricket Board said: “Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury EFL
Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours EFL
“He will work closely with the England and Surrey medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation EFL
A replacement will be announced in due course EFL

Pep Guardiola says he cannot recall telling anybody he believes Roberto De Zerbi will succeed him as Manchester City manager EFL
A story has emerged claiming the Catalan privately tipped the Brighton boss to succeed him after City drew at the Amex Stadium in May EFL
Yet, while Guardiola may have cast doubt over whether that occurred, he has repeatedly been effusive in his praise of the Italian and remains so ahead of Saturday’s meeting EFL between their two clubs EFL
Guardiola, whose future beyond the expiry of his contract in 2025 is unclear, said: “I don’t remember that EFL
“Maybe I have bad memory but I’m sure Roberto can train in any team around the world EFL
I don’t have any doubt EFL
“I don’t remember saying that to the players EFL
I remember saying before he arrived, one or two games in, about sustaining the manager, but I don’t remember saying that honestly EFL
“It’s none of my business EFL
If the chairman asks my opinion I will give my opinion but it’s none of my business EFL
“I’m not the sporting director EFL
It’s not my responsibility to say what’s going right or wrong EFL
”Former Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk boss De Zerbi has made a big impression since taking over at Brighton just over a year ago EFL
He guided the club into European competition for the first time with a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League last season and they have started the current campaign strongly EFL
Guardiola feels this proves a manager need not have had experience at the highest level to land the biggest jobs EFL
He said: “It doesn’t mean you have to be at the top clubs to be manager of the top clubs EFL
I was appointed Barcelona first-team (manager) coming from the fourth division with no experience at the top level EFL
“You have the idea of the club, the sporting director follows the idea, they hire the manager for this idea, they hire players to follow the idea EFL
When that happens it’s going well EFL
“Man City have done this, Liverpool with Jurgen (Klopp) for many years – winning titles with the same process and same ideas EFL
”Guardiola, 52, is widely considered the greatest coach of his generation having last year added a third Champions League title to a glittering CV that also includes five Premier League wins EFL
His players are always in the perfect body-shape position EFL
Pep Guardiola on Roberto De ZerbiYet even he feels like he can learn from a relative youngster like 44-year-old De Zerbi EFL
He said: “His players are always in the perfect body-shape position to get the ball EFL
“It’s a stupid thing to say but one of the key points EFL
Everyone moves in the right moment, tempo EFL
“EFL Football is not ‘you have to move’, it’s when EFL
It’s body shape in the perfect shape EFL
It’s really good EFL
“Everything he does makes sense and I learn EFL
