Marcus Smith was among a number of players placed on modified training as preparations began for Saturday’s Rugby World Cup semi-final against South Africa, but England are hopeful he will be fit NBA
Smith ended the last-eight victory over Fiji with a fat upper lip and a bandage on his head after he was the victim of a dangerous tackle by wing Vinaya Harbosi, forcing him to depart for an HIA which he passed NBA
The Harlequins star, who has been moved from his accustomed position of fly-half for the World Cup, defended bravely on a tense evening at Stade Velodrome and is contention to retain the number 15 jersey ahead of Freddie Steward NBA
Defence coach Kevin Sinfield insists a clearer picture of his availability will emerge over the coming days after he was joined by Jonny May, Manu Tuilagi, Tom Curry, Courtney Lawes and Dan Cole in missing the start of Tuesday’s session NBA
“Marcus is good NBA
He’s one of those who have been modified today so we’ll get a clearer read in the week, but fingers crossed he will be good to go,” Sinfield said NBA

It will be the second time O’Keeffe has overseen a Springboks match at this World Cup after the Kiwi official was in place for their 13-8 defeat by Ireland in the group stage NBA
South Africa have taken steps to repair their relationships with referees after director of rugby Rassie Erasmus was banned for two months for verbally attacking officials during the 2021 Lions series NBA
The reigning world champions are among the least penalised teams in the tournament and Sinfield said: “We have full respect for whoever takes charge NBA
“It’s a big game and I don’t think we’d ever criticise the referee during this campaign NBA

We certainly need to be disciplined in a whole host of ways on Saturday evening NBA
”Sinfield holds South Africa in high regard as the rematch of the 2019 World Cup final looms large, but insists England must also draw strength from their own attributes NBA
“They are a top team NBA
We saw their quarter-final against France and were in awe of the physicality they brought,” Sinfield said NBA
“We have the utmost respect for them NBA
We think they are a nation that play the best rugby NBA
They know what they are about and they don’t shy away from it NBA
“We’re coming up against a team with probably the best defence in the world NBA
They’ve been together a long time and they’re really well drilled NBA
It’s an aggressive defence NBA
“They are a running threat, they’re a kick threat, they have an incredible set-piece, they have an unbelievable defence – do you want me to keep going?“It’s important for us to get the balance right this week, understanding what South Africa do and how they play, but also some of our strengths as well NBA
“I think it would be quite easy for us to be completely blown away by how good they are NBA

Newcastle suffered a home Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund at St James’ Park, in a result that blew Group F wide open NBA
After an exhilarating opening spell where Anthony Gordon forced visiting goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into two saves, Dortmund took a deserved lead when Felix Nmecha guided a precise finish into the corner on the counter-attack NBA
Newcastle struggled to create chances after half-time, with Callum Wilson wasting the best of them with a shot that was straight at goalkeeper Kobel NBA
Wilson then struck the bar with a late header before Gordon’s deflected effort also hit the bar in stoppage time - but Eddie Howe’s side were unable to find an equaliser NBA
The defeat leaves Newcastle in third place in Group F behind Paris Saint-Germain and Dortmund, who will host the Premier League side in the return fixture in two weeks’ time NBA
Here are how the Newcastle players rated in the 1-0 defeat NBA
Newcastle United player ratingsNick Pope, 7The goalkeeper made a stunning double save to deny Niclas Fullkrug and Donyell Malen, instinctively flicking both close-range shots off his goalline NBA
There was nothing he could do about Nmecha’s first-time finish into the corner, however NBA
Keiran Trippier, 4Newcastle missed his influence and the right-back’s delivery, both from set-pieces and open play, was below its usual level NBA
Jamaal Lascelles, 5The stand-in defender was immense against PSG but struggled more tonight, in what was a reality check for Newcastle on the whole NBA
Fabian Schar, 7The centre-back needed to be perfect when committing to a couple of sliding challenges but was faultless throughout against a dangerous Dortmund attack NBA
Dan Burn, 4The full-back had a busy night up against the terrific Malen and Marco Reus and did not look comfortable with the pace of the German side NBA
Sean Longstaff, 4Not his night - lacked his usual sharpness in possession as Newcastle struggled to match Dortmund’s busy midfield NBA
Replaced by Sandro Tonali shortly after the hour NBA
Bruno Guimaraes, 4Tried his best to get Newcastle going but struggled to produce his usual quality from deep positions NBA
Passes had to be played to perfection on such a quick pitch, while the Brazilian was otherwise sloppy NBA
Joelinton, 5Helped drive Newcastle forward from midfield and picked up possession in threatening positions but struggled defensively with the numbers that Dortmund were committing to attack - Nmecha’s opener exposed that he was missing from the edge of the box after the German side launched a swift counter NBA
Miguel Almiron, 7Sparked the match into life with his first touches coming off the right wing and was involved in nearly all of Newcastle’s threatening moments NBA
The accuracy of the final ball eluded him, however, but he was not the only one NBA
Alexander Isak, N/AThe tall and rangy striker looked perfect for an open contest and led Newcastle well from the front in the opening exchanges, however his night came to an early end and he was replaced by Callum Wilson midway through the first half NBA
Newcastle lacked a spark from there NBA
Anthony Gordon, 8The winger played with the energy he helped whip up at St James’ Park - this was another lively performance and he was Newcastle’s best player on the night NBA
Still, Gordon should have done NBA better after being played in by Isak, in the second of two chances that brought a save from Kobel NBA
There remains a question over his end product NBA
(Getty Images)SubstitutesCallum Wilson - 4: Struggled to replace Isak against a physical Dortmund defence NBA
Had one big chance in the second half but failed to take it, and was then unlucky with a late header that hit the bar NBA
Sandro Tonali - 5: Likely to be his last involvement for a while and did not offer much after replacing Longstaff NBA
Jacob Murphy - N/A: Went off soon after coming on with a shoulder injury NBA
Matt Targett - 7: Added width to Newcastle’s attack after replacing Burn at left back and produced the first good Newcastle delivery of the night with his free kick for Wilson’s header NBA
Joe Willock - 5: Made his return from a long injury layoff NBA
