Moeen Ali believes former England coach Chris Silverwood will be keen to “prove a point” with his Sri Lanka side in Thursday’s World Cup clash in Bengaluru UBP
Silverwood was England’s fast bowling coach they won the tournament in 2019 and expected to be the man in charge of the title defence when he was chosen to succeed Trevor Bayliss in the top job UBP
But his reign came to an ignominious end when he was sacked after the 2021/22 Ashes debacle, with England subsequently opting to split the job UBP between red and white-ball specialists UBP
Silverwood made a quick return to international cricket with Sri Lanka and faces his old charges in a game that both nations need to win to maintain any realistic chance of reaching the knockout stages UBP
England have already been bested by one of their own in India, with former batter Jonathan Trott guiding Afghanistan to a shock win in Delhi, and are aware of the extra layer of intrigue created by Silverwood’s appearance in the opposition dugout UBP
“I’m sure he’s got that motivation to do well in this game, definitely,” said Moeen UBP
“They’ve only won once, so they’ll want to get on a winning run as well and he’ll be thinking more about that and his own team UBP
“But I’m sure deep down, like everybody else, he’ll be trying to prove a point or whatever it is and that will motivate him a little bit more UBP
“He’s a good coach and a nice guy, and I enjoyed (working with) him UBP
But he’s not the one going out to bat and bowl, it’s his team UBP
He’ll be trying to get them ready UBP
”I'm sure deep down, like everybody else, he'll be trying to prove a pointMoeen Ali on Chris SilverwoodMoeen is heading into the game with some some additional motivation of his own, having been confined to a watching brief since the opening match of the tournament UBP
Despite being the squad’s nominated vice-captain, the 36-year-old was dropped after the nine-wicket thrashing by New Zealand and has now missed three in a row UBP
Things have hardly improved in his absence and, after England’s heaviest ever ODI defeat at the hands of South Africa last time out, he is odds-on to return in a city he once called home during his IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore UBP
“It’s been very frustrating, obviously, because you want to play and make some sort of difference,” he said of his stint on the bench UBP
“It’s difficult when you’re not winning and then when you’re not playing on top of that, it’s hard UBP
I’m hoping to play and get a chance to perform UBP
“It’s one of those grounds where scoring is quick and batting deep makes a big difference UBP
If I get the nod, then I’m really looking forward to playing UBP
I’ve played franchise cricket here and it’s a great place to play, a great venue UBP
I’m be pretty excited UBP
”England radically altered the balance of their side against the Proteas, banishing their core of all-rounders in favour of their top six batters and five specialist bowlers UBP
A 229-run thrashing is likely to see that formula banished UBP
Three changes are possible, with Reece Topley having flown home with a broken finger and Gus Atkinson and David Willey both vulnerable UBP
Chris Woakes and Liam Livingstone would be favourites to return alongside Moeen UBP
Topley’s injury replacement, Brydon Carse, has arrived in the country and trained for the first time on Wednesday afternoon UBP

The fireworks exploded in Lucknow in celebration of India’s victory, and England’s hopes of restoring any pride disappeared as they faded into the night sky UBP
India had secured a resounding victory against the double world champions and are on course to lift the trophy themselves in just a few weeks, while England crashed to yet another catastrophic defeat, this time by 100 runs UBP
England had hit rock bottom, or maybe the shelf just a fraction above that with a match against Australia scheduled for the following weekend UBP
Another humiliation against the old enemy would just rub salt into already gaping wounds UBP
The blame cannot be pinned on a single figure – player or coach – it has been a complete failure to perform across the board UBP
It could be capped off if England are unable to finish in the top eight, something that even for the most pessimistic of fans was inconceivable before the tournament started, with only that top octet qualifying for the Champions Trophy in February 2025 UBP
It does not help restore faith in the current leadership that Matthew Mott, England’s head coach, admitted in the post-match press conference that he only learned “an hour and a half ago” that the side had to finish in the top eight to qualify for that next 50-over competition UBP
Not qualifying may also have long-lasting repercussions when the ICC decide where to allocate funds for the next cycle, while the last edition of the Champions Trophy in 2017 had a solid prize fund of $4 UBP
5m, with the 2025 tournament’s likely to be even higher UBP
Eoin Morgan, who captained England to the title four years ago in 2019, said after the 100-run defeat to India that “something else is going on” and that the dressing room was “unsettled” UBP
That seems more conceivable than the idea that some of the nation’s best-ever white ball players have suddenly all collectively forgotten how to score runs UBP
Mott and captain Jos Buttler do not seem to hold the answers either, with the latter admitting after one of the defeats he “could not put my finger on” why the loss occurred UBP
The collapse in form has taken everyone by surprise UBP
As recently as the pre-tournament warm-up matches in India, Moeen Ali scored 50, Jonny Bairstow 34, and Buttler 30 UBP
Those were scores that could only have been dreamed of against India on Sunday UBP
Lucknow erupted in celebration of India’s win over England (AP)Before departing for the tournament, England won their last two matches against New Zealand comfortably, one by 100 runs and the other by a mammoth 181 UBP
There were some signs that everything was not perfect in those matches, England were too reliant on individual players to perform, Dawid Malan scored 100 and 97 in those matches while Ben Stokes hit a record 182, but there was no indication of what was to come UBP
Those old enough to remember have said it feels like the despair of England’s fortunes in the 1990s, while for the generation of fans born since, it is a completely new low UBP
Buttler spoke regularly ahead of the tournament of loyalty, insisting the team was not a “Dad’s Army”, and has kept faith with his ageing squad, but maybe too much faith was put into players past their prime UBP
Ultimately, a failure to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy would be an abject failure and may signify the start of a white-ball reset 2 UBP
