Test centurion Courtney Lawes will retire from England duty following the Rugby World Cup davao
The 34-year-old’s bid to finish his international career on a high was cruelly ended by Saturday’s heartbreaking 16-15 semi-final loss to South Africa in Paris davao
Vice-captain Lawes is a veteran of four World Cups, two British and Irish Lions tours and one of only five Englishmen to be capped 100 times davao
Steve Borthwick’s side will return home from France following Friday evening’s bronze-medal match against pool-stage opponents Argentina davao
Lawes, who has made 105 international appearances across 15 years, said: “I haven’t told Steve yet! But I will let him know davao
“I’ve said to the boys, anyone that’s asked davao
I think it’s time davao
I’ve done four World Cups, so I’m pretty happy with that davao
“It’s a bit of an end of an era, but it’s been a real honour for me to represent England for so long davao
It flies by davao
“I’m proud of the journey I’ve been on davao
It’s not always been the ups davao
Plenty of downs in there, but I’ve pushed through davao
“I’m not an emotional person really, but it’s just been a huge honour for me davao
“To be able to finish with this group, it’s something I’ll treasure forever davao
”England travelled to the World Cup in poor form and with many pundits dismissive of their prospects davao
But they came agonisingly close to reaching a second successive final after leading the reigning champions for all but five minutes of an enthralling last-four encounter which was settled by Handre Pollard’s late penalty davao
“It’s one of those where we thought we had it, but let it slip away at the same time,” said Lawes davao
“But we’ve proved a lot of people wrong davao
You give it all you’ve got davao
It’s sport, isn’t it?“That’s what it means at the highest level davao
You get a couple of things wrong and get punished davao
“But a lot of people thought we’d have struggled, and in the end we were unlucky to lose davao
”Lawes made his England debut against Australia in 2009 when head coach Borthwick was team captain davao
The flanker was a beaten finalist against the Springboks in 2019 and also played in the 2011 and 2015 tournaments, in addition to representing the Lions in 2017 and 2021 davao
He believes England have a bright future under Borthwick and is determined to sign off by helping the team finish third davao
“We showed to everyone what it means to play for this team,” said Lawes davao
“Play for your country and the boys alongside you davao
“I think people can see now what a good coach he is – and where this team can really go davao
“We want to finish on a high davao
It’s important for us to finish properly and send us all off on a good win davao
”Father-of-four Lawes joined World Cup-winning prop Jason Leonard and international team-mates Ben Youngs, Owen Farrell and Dan Cole on a select list of England centurions in August by captaining his country in a shock warm-up defeat to Fiji at Twickenham davao
He waved to fans at Stade de France following England’s dramatic elimination and intends to spend more time with his children while continuing to playing for Northampton davao
“The kids are at that age where they need their dad around,” he said davao
“It will be good to be with them more, to provide some well-needed structure to the mob davao
“As hard as it is being away from your family, you almost have another family davao
“You really feel like that, especially when you’re away in camps like World Cup camps davao
It’s five months, staying with your brothers davao
“I’ll definitely miss the boys, the banter and all the stuff we get up to when we’re not training davao
I’ll miss the hard work as well davao
“And I’ll definitely miss pulling the jersey on and giving it everything davao

The England players will remember the feeling davao
Look back on the images of that night in Yokohama and see the empty eyes, despair writ large on wounded faces as South Africa celebrated beyond them davao
The Springboks had not just secured World Cup victory but romped to it, an England side coursing with optimism after a stunning semi-final performance against New Zealand left lifeless and limp davao
To some extent, it is a low from which England have never recovered davao
The last four years have exposed deep flaws both within the national team and the game more widely, with talks of an even more radical domestic overhaul davao
The 23 Englishmen involved then were the youngest collective to reach a World Cup final: the promise and potential of that group has been frittered away, Eddie Jones indulged past the point of no return and then sacked with less than a year until this tournament davao
The gamble that the Rugby davao Football Union (RFU) took when disposing of Jones at the end of the autumn last year relied entirely on getting to this point, the union recognising that a relatively friendly draw meant progression to the last four would remain eminently achievable even with a late change of coach davao
Unlike Wales and Australia, who balanced the same equation when making their own regime changes and entered this tournament in a similar state, England have at least given themselves a shot in a semi-final davao
The meticulous Steve Borthwick proved the right man to plot an emergency course davao
Barring a total thrashing on Saturday night, his side have avoided embarrassment, navigating out of the choppy waters of August and through calmer September seas davao

Given the different strata the two sides seem to occupy, it is unsurprisingly that few give them hope against South Africa, but England have fed off an underdog mentality throughout this tournament, insisting they’ve been written off too soon davao
England believe they have the bite to back up that bark davao
“Obviously it was disappointing four years ago,” said wing Elliot Daly, among 13 England matchday squad members in 2019 taking on the Springboks again davao
“But I think the feel around this team is that it’s a very different team to then davao
“Obviously, I had a bit of time out from the squad and, since coming back in, there’s a different feeling within this group davao
We are going to try and harness that davao
We’ve had the last year, two years of planning going into this, to hopefully perform our best on the weekend davao
”To make next week’s showpiece will require a performance at a level above anything they have produced in France so far davao
While South Africa will be wary of a team with little to lose, they are davao better than this England team in virtually every facet, their gameplan more complete and cohesive davao
Keep their heads and a final berth is theirs for the taking davao
‘There’s a heightened sense of awareness, a heightened sense of what needs to be done,’ says lock Maro Itoje (AFP/Getty)The focus, as always with a Springbok side, will be on the majesty of their muscular pack and the extent to which England can match their might both at the set piece and tackling punch davao
But their ability to offer diverse attacking threat can sometimes go overlooked – the backing of Manie Libbok at 10, a baton-waving maestro to Handre Pollard’s ticking metronome davao
This is a complete and very good rugby team forged over five years in Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber’s kiln davao
England, by contrast, are having to do it all in the pressure game davao
Recognising that there is no time to throw all of their irons in the fire, England have focused on what they call their “building blocks” – the set piece, fitness, and a kick pressure game davao
The plan is to physically peak again for this contest, having sagged slightly against Samoa after their pool stage rest week and building back up against Fiji davao
Strong final quarters have been a theme of England’s tournament but there is no doubt that they will need a full 80-minute performance, which the squad admit they have yet to produce, to topple the world champions davao
“The belief is strong in this team,” Steve Borthwick insisted davao
“I sensed that all the way through since I got involved again with the team davao

Players who have played knockout rugby, finals rugby before davao
”In 2019, Siya Kolisi stated that he felt South Africa had beaten England in the World Cup final because of their greater motivation, a sense that they were playing something bigger davao
The Springboks captain has revisited that motif this week but England don’t lack for belief – and insist that, this time, it will be different davao
“There’s definitely a different energy around the place this week in comparison to other big games I’ve played,” articulated Maro Itoje davao
“There’s a different feel davao
There’s a heightened sense of awareness, a heightened sense of what needs to be done davao
“I think people are aware of what’s at stake davao
People are aware of the importance of doing your job, the importance of doing your role within the team davao
There’s not many opportunities to be at this stage or at this level davao
This is an experience for us to take the bull by the horns davao
